The Trial of Chaos in Path of Exile 2 is a multi-stage gauntlet with 10 rounds of challenges including fighting monsters, surviving timed events, escorting statues, collecting soul cores, and defeating bosses. The key reason you need Cowardly Fate is that it is one of three special Soul Core fragments (along with Deadly Fate and Victorious Fate) dropped by bosses in rounds 4, 7, and 10 of the Trial. Collecting these three Fates allows you to unlock the Trialmaster door, granting access to the pinnacle boss fight called the Trialmaster.

Completing the Trial of Chaos requires you to pick one of three negative modifiers (Tribulations) before each round, which carry over and increase the challenge as you progress. The final boss of round 10 always drops one of the Fates, including Cowardly Fate, which you must farm by running the full 10-round Trial repeatedly if you want to progress to the next pinnacle content.

To maximize your efficiency:

Run Trials at higher area levels (75+ for 10 rounds) for better rewards.

Build your character for fast clear speed and survivability.

Choose Tribulations that complement your build and avoid ones that overly hinder your movement.

Consider purchasing extra Inscribed Ultimatums from other players to speed farming.

Use the Currency Exchange NPC to supplement missing Fates if RNG isn't in your favor.

Cowardly Fate is essential because:

It is required to unlock the Trialmaster door.

Gathering it means completing full 10-round Trial of Chaos runs.

It unlocks some of the most challenging pinnacle content the game offers.

Without farming and collecting Cowardly Fate, you cannot face the Trialmaster, making it a crucial fragment for advancing endgame progression in Path of Exile 2.
