The Ancient Crisis Fragment plays a crucial role in unlocking the Burning Monolith, the pinnacle endgame activity in Path of Exile 2. The Burning Monolith is a fortress-like area locked behind a gate requiring three special keys known as Crisis Fragments Ancient, Faded, and Weathered to gain entry. These fragments are essential to begin the ultimate challenge of fighting the game's most difficult boss, the Arbiter of Ash.
To unlock the Burning Monolith, you must first collect each Crisis Fragment from Citadels scattered across the Atlas of Worlds. Specifically, the Ancient Crisis Fragment is obtained by defeating the faction leader boss, Count Geonor, inside the Iron Citadel. This Citadel is a rare and challenging map node that requires a tier 15 or higher Waystone to access. The Citadel bosses are unique Uber Act bosses guarded by two lieutenants, which you must defeat to engage the leader and secure the fragment.
Once you have all three Crisis Fragments, you place them into the altar inside the locked gate of the Burning Monolith. Activating the altar with these fragments opens the entrance, granting access to the Arbiter of Ash encounter. This fight is known for its intensity, requiring well-optimized builds and precise mechanics to succeed.
Unlocking the Burning Monolith thus marks a major milestone in Path of Exile 2’s progression, symbolizing your readiness to face the highest tier of challenge the game currently offers. Players often invest significant time in farming the Citadels for these fragments, ensuring they are fully prepared before confronting the Arbiter of Ash.
The Ancient Crisis Fragment is one of three critical keys obtained by conquering the Iron Citadel boss. Collecting it, along with the other fragments, is mandatory to unlock the Burning Monolith and engage the final pinnacle boss, showcasing the fragment’s indispensable role in advancing into Path of Exile 2’s ultimate endgame content.
