Ascendancy classes in Path of Exile 2 represent specialized subclasses for each base class, unlocking unique passive trees and abilities that define endgame builds. Unlike the original game's labyrinths, PoE 2 uses Trials of Ascendancy—special dungeons accessed via quests in Acts 2 and 3—to grant these power spikes. Completing trials awards up to 8 ascendancy points total, starting with your first subclass choice around level 20-30 for massive early power.

Starting with Trial of the Sekhemas

Progress through Act 2's main quest "Trail of Corruption" until reaching Traitor's Passage in the Ardura Caravan. Speak to Balbala's Barya to pick up the "Ascent to Power" side quest, which provides the trial key. Enter the Trial of the Sekhemas, a multi-floor dungeon emphasizing Honour management—gain Honour from kills, lose it on damage, and fail if it hits zero. Navigate randomized rooms like Rituals (clear enemies), Hourglasses (wave survival), or Gauntlets (speed challenges), prioritizing boons for buffs and keys for treasures. First completion unlocks your ascendancy choice (e.g., Warrior to Titan) and 2 points.

Advancing to Trial of Chaos

In Act 3's Vaal Jungle, obtain a Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum from the Trialmaster in the Temple of Chaos to access the Trial of Chaos. This trial skips Honour mechanics, focusing on 10+ rounds of escalating modifiers, bosses, and choices—select safer affixes early to build momentum. Clear rooms sequentially, using gold keys for end rewards like Vaal Orbs or uniques. Repeat runs here or revisit Sekhemas at higher levels (60+ for 3 floors, 75+ for more) to claim points 3-4, then 5-6. Pinnacle versions with fate fragments unlock the final 7-8 points.

Choosing and Allocating Your Ascendancy

Upon trial success, interact with the ascendancy altar to select from three options per class—Warrior picks Titan for slams, Deadeye for Ranger projectiles, or Chronomancer for Sorceress time manipulation. Allocate 2 initial points into notables (large nodes) on the dedicated tree for skills like Ancestral Empowerment or Time Snap. Points cap at 8; respec via orbs if needed. Early Access limits to 12 ascendancies (2 per class), expanding later.

Optimization Tips for All Points

Gear for chaos resist, life leech, and mobility before trials—level 25+ smooths Sekhemas. Party for shared Honour/revives, but solo refines mechanics. Farm Honour in Ritual rooms, dodge curses, flask aggressively. Skip Chaos if Honour suits your build; flexibility lets you max one trial type. Post-unlock, trials integrate into mapping for extras.

Common Pitfalls and Progression

Avoid low resists or greed on risky boons—reset bad starts. Track quest items to prevent skips. Trials fuel 24+ permanent skill points via treasures. Master this system early to dominate PoE 2's campaign and beyond with subclass supremacy.
