If you played the old Labyrinth in the first game, you probably remember how brutal it felt to unlock your Ascendancy. It was this fixed, trap-filled maze that every build had to suffer through, whether it suited you or not, even if what you really wanted was to focus on gearing or things like like buy game currency or items in EZNPC. Path of Exile 2 changes that completely. Now you have the Trials of Ascendancy, and they're way more flexible. You choose how you unlock your class power, rather than being forced into the same layout as everyone else.

Early Trials And First Points

Most players bump into the Trial of the Sekhemas in Act 2. You grab a Djinn Barya key from Balbala and drop into a multi-floor dungeon that feels more like a mechanics test than a pure DPS race. You're dodging spike traps, watching for death crystals that punish greedy movement, and dealing with rooms full of those hourglass mobs that punish you if you stand still too long. It really pushes your awareness and your ability to react. Kill the boss at the end, usually someone like Bahlak, and your Ascendancy unlocks on the spot. Your Witch becomes an Infernalist, your class tree opens up, and you get your first two points.

Choosing Chaos Instead Of Traps

If you can't stand trap gameplay, you don't have to force it. In Act 3, over in the Vaal Jungle, the Trialmaster offers the Trial of Chaos instead. This one plays more like an Ultimatum encounter: waves of enemies, random mods, and escalating chaos damage flying everywhere. It's the option that suits builds that just want to blow up the screen and keep moving. If your clear speed is strong and your character can tank or avoid sudden spikes, this route often feels smoother for grabbing that first Ascendancy unlock, especially for players who'd rather kite mobs than memorize trap timings.

Pushing To Max Ascendancy

The easy part is getting those first four points. Things get serious when you go for points five through eight. You'll usually pick up two more in Act 3 from tougher trials, but then you're looking at high-level content: maybe a Level 60+ Djinn Barya run with three floors, or a Level 75+ Chaos trial that stretches to ten rounds. To finish all eight, you need to clear a Level 75+ Sekhemas version that extends to four floors, where one mistake can cost the whole attempt. It's stressful, but the big win is that once you've done these on one character, the unlocked Ascendancy points carry across your league roster, so you don't have to repeat the hardest trials on every new alt.

Prep, Defense And Group Play

When you're gearing up for the higher tiers, your defenses matter more than your raw damage. In the Chaos trials, chaos resistance is basically mandatory or you'll just disappear in the later rounds when the numbers ramp up. For Sekhemas, movement skills are your lifeline. Being able to dash, blink or charge past traps and quickly break crystals often matters more than another 10% damage. It's smart to test your build in lower-tier keys first before you risk the top ones, and a lot of players bring a friend for the big runs. One person can handle mechanics while the other focuses on damage, and that split often saves a failed attempt.
